In general our orthopaedists work closely with a surgical team including an anaesthesiologist and surgical nurse.
If pain is a problem then our physiotherapists are the solution. Study and experiences prove that physiotherapy has been a very effective tool against pains and injuries ranging from minor to major. Hence the prescription of physiotherapy can never be a wrong one in case of curing pain or injury. In case when a joint complication is to be dealt with by the help of physiotherapy, our physiotherapist may twist or fold the limbs having infirmities into positions which are not usually posed. To get rid of muscle tenancy or immobility our physiotherapist may suggest stretches, exercises, heat therapy, massage or traction and such things alone or they may be coupled and grouped as well as per the seriousness or condition of the problem. To escape from head ache or muscle ache sometimes painkiller are effective but they have limitations and side effects as well but physiotherapy deals with pains and injuries of upper tiers.
Our Physiotherapist not only helps escaped from pains and injuries on table but it saves us from further such ailments. Healthcare professionals actually admit the importance of physiotherapy when they put stress on saying that heavy object should be picked up using knee bends instead of waist to avoid arousal of any deformity of the back bone. Whiplash is a condition due to vehicle accidents which may result in dizziness, numbness, pain in shoulder and neck muscles, ringing of bell in ear and such others. Against even these the doctors prescribe physiotherapy which may involve different sorts of techniques to rehabilitate the patient back to normal. Neurological disorders such as strokes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, cerebral palsy and spinal cord injury make up a great percentage of our physiotherapist’s caseload. A stroke patient may present with hemiplegia (paralysis on one side of the body), hemiparesis (weakness on one side of the body) abnormal muscle tone and/or neglect of one side of the body. Physiotherapy is invaluable in correcting these issues or, where necessary, in training the individual to compensate for these deficits. Interventions focus on muscle reeducation, transfers, restoring and improving gait and training in the use of mobility aids.
For children suffering from cerebral palsy, physiotherapy is essential in helping to reduce spasticity and deformity, improve postural control, train the child to use assistive devices and do all that is necessary to maximise the child’s functional independence. We will also educate the family so they can help carryover what the child has learned during therapy sessions. Cardiopulmonary conditions respond well to physiotherapy intervention. Patients who have difficulty performing their activities of daily living, shortness of breath and decreased endurance, can achieve markedly improved quality of life through guided exercise and resistance training. Intervention also includes counseling about risk factors, patient education to prevent future recurrence and behavior modification. For those patients who have had cardiac surgery, physiotherapy is initiated early to prevent the patient from losing strength and function. Many patients, especially the elderly, become fearful after cardiac surgery. Proper training in getting in and out of bed, pushing up from a chair and walking can help the patient regain confidence and set them on the road to recovery.
Our urologists diagnose, treat, and manage patients with urological disorders. The organs covered by urology include the kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, and the male reproductive organs (testes, epididymis, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate and penis). The urinary and reproductive tracts are closely linked, and disorders of one often affect the other, so a major part of the conditions managed in urology fall in the area of genitourinary disorders. Urology combines management of medical problems (such as urinary tract infections, elective problems), as well as surgical problems (such as the surgical management of cancers, the correction of congenital abnormalities, and correcting stress incontinence, to mention a few). Our urologists are experts as to these regard.
They provide each patient with the highest possible level of care. In addition we offer a range of specialized services and programmes to meet the needs of adult and children.
We provide a wide range of special options when medications and other non-surgical treatments are not enough.

Our Ophthalmologists perform routine eye exams, detect, diagnose and manage eye diseases that require medical treatment.
Immunization Is an aim of preventive medicine, whereby a substance that causes the production of antibodies in the body is injected and so provides immunity against diseases. Immunizations can save your child’s life. Because of advances in medical science, your child can be protected against more diseases than ever before. Some diseases that once injured or killed thousands of children, have been eliminated completely and others are close to extinctionâ, primarily due to safe and effective vaccines. Vaccines will involve some discomfort and may cause pain, redness, or tenderness at the site of injection but this is minimal compared to the pain, discomfort, and trauma of the diseases these vaccines prevent. Serious side effects following vaccination, such as severe allergic reaction, are very rare. The disease-prevention benefits of getting vaccines are much greater than the possible side effects for almost all children. Vaccines are given to adults, children both male and female. From birth (Age 0- Adulthood). Some vaccines are repeated after expiration.
Five Reasons to Protect Your Children Through Vaccination
- Vaccines work well and prevent further effects of diseases.
- Vaccination protects children from the very serious complications of vaccine-preventable diseases. Possible complications include hospitalization, amputation, brain damage, paralysis, meningitis, seizures, deafness, and even death.
- Vaccination keeps children healthy, which means they don’t have to stay home from day care or school. No one wants their child to be sick and suffering from one of these diseases.
- If children aren’t vaccinated, they can spread disease to other children who are too young to be vaccinated or whose medical condition prevents them from being vaccinated (e.g., leukemia, other forms of cancer, immune system problems). This could result in long-term complications and even death for other children. Children are BEST protected if they are vaccinated.
- If many parents decided to not vaccinate their children, diseases would return to our community in full force. Here in first rivers hospital, in line with world health organization (WHO)standard we put in place the reinforcement of national program on immunization.

Types of Surgery performed by our surgeons
Elective surgery
This term is used for operations that are planned in advance, to distinguish them from operations performed as an emergency.
Emergency surgery
Operations that require immediate admission to hospital, usually through the accident and emergency department. They are usually performed within 24 hours, and may be done immediately or during the night for serious or life-threatening conditions. Examples include acute appendicitis; haemorrhage, perforation or obstruction of the intestines; major trauma, including many fractures; and a ruptured spleen or aneurysm.
Keyhole surgery
Advances in surgical treatments have enabled many conditions to be treated by “keyhole surgery”, which involves very small incisions and less pain and trauma for the patient than in conventional surgery. The surgeon can see the area to be operated on by looking through a fine tube with a light on the end (known as a fibre optic light source) and carries out the operation by using special instruments inserted through the tube. Removal of gall bladder or gallstones and some operations on the prostate gland or on joints may be suitable for keyhole surgery. The operations are carried out under anaesthetic.
Laparoscopic surgery
This is similar to keyhole surgery but refers especially to operations performed inside the abdomen and in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdomen).
Microsurgery
Our Surgeons use a powerful magnifying device to enable them to operate on tiny structures such as small arteries, nerves, the bones of the middle ear or inside the eye. Delicate and extremely small instruments are used.
Organ Transplant Surgery
Where a patient has a failing organ, for example a diseased kidney, it is sometimes possible to replace it with a healthy one donated by another human being. In the case of a kidney the donor may be a relative or someone who has recently died and had completed an organ donor card requesting that their body be used to help others. Transplant surgery is sometimes offered to patients with liver or serious heart failure. Our Surgeons carry out this type of surgery and been acquinted in immunology, they help to prevent the body from rejecting the organ.
Major surgery
These are surgeries of the head, neck, chest, and abdomen. The recovery time can be lengthy and may involve a stay in intensive care or several days in the hospital.
Minor surgery
Some surgeries that children undergo are considered minor. The recovery time is short and children return to their usual activities rapidly. These surgeries are most often done as an outpatient, and children can return home the same day. Complications from these types of surgeries are rare. Our Surgeons also perform hypothermia- complex intracardiac repairs take more time and the patient needs blood flow to the body, particularly to the brain. The patient needs the function of the heart and lungs provided by an artificial method, hence the term cardiopulmonary bypass. Open heart surgery is a surgery in which the patient’s heart is open and surgery is performed on the internal structures of the heart.

Visit therefore means visits to the hospital or health facility for checks and treatment; before delivery. The importance of antenatal visits can not be over emphasized. And as such the visits are shared into the three trimester of pregnancy; with the timing and frequency of visits established.
FIRST TREMESTER ANTENATAL VISIT; 1-12 WEEKS:-
After establishing a viable pregnancy; it is advice that a pregnant mother be registered for routine antenatal visits as early as 8 week. The first trimester visit is important for the following reasons; To screen for any serious health problems seen diabetes or hypertension that could have adverse effect on the pregnancy. To establish baselines for weight, blood pressure for proper monitoring all through pregnancy. To do routine investigations like hemoglobin level, bold grouping, genotype retroviral screening, hepatitis b se…. antigen, VDRL to rule out any abnormalities. To establish gestational age(no of weeks of pregnancy) since their becomes more difficult in later pregnancy. To counsel on pregnancy related topics that would be beneficial to mother and baby. To establish good rapport /relationship between mothers and care givers to effect good health and safe delivery.
Note: Visits during the First trimester is usually schedule at (1) monthly interval.
2nd TRIMESTER VISIT (13 – 27 WEEKS)
The visits during the second trimester is scheduled at 2 weekly intervals. During this time, antenatal classes are in top gears because women need to learn more about their growing pregnancy, and their even changing conditions and how to adapt.
3rd TRIMESTER VISIT (28 – 42 WEEKS)
The visits are now scheduled for weekly interval. From the start of antenatal visit and antenatal classes, the woman must have learnt much about her growing pregnancy and how to adapt to the changes. While the quality of patient-physician relations has been associated with improved health outcomes and functional status, little is known about the impact of different patient-physician interaction styles on patients’ diabetes self-management. This study assessed the influence of patients’ evaluation of their physicians’ participatory decision-making style, rating of physician communication, and reported understanding of diabetes self-care on their self-reported diabetes management.
Our Successful medical encounters require effective communication between the patient and the physician. “Success” implies that the patient and physician have developed a “partnership” and the patient has been fully educated in the nature of his or her condition and the different methods to address the problem. This allows the patient to be actively involved in the decision-making process and establishes agreed upon expectations and goals. We have developed many models and approaches to improve our ability to communicate with our patients. These models focus on improvement in the quality of the encounter and do not necessarily require any significant increased investment in the length of the encounter. Interestingly, not only do successful encounters improve our patient outcomes they have also been shown to improve professional satisfaction. These skills lead to professional respect among the Doctors’ peers.
Our Diagnosis is a key feature of our doctors expertise in medical practices. This is a core cognitive skill, based on both knowledge and judgement. It involves responding to the initial presentation of illness, prioritising and synthesising information, making a clinical assessment and then taking responsibility for this and following it through. The adequate application of history taking, physical examination and interpreting investigations requires knowledge and understanding of the full range of clinical sciences. This allows our trained medical practitioners to consider the full breadth of possible diagnoses in assessing and treating a patient. Knowledge of the natural history of disease allows doctors to estimate prognosis, inform patients and their carers and underpin treatment options and choices.
The understanding of human behavior and the mind is intriquing. In addition, people tend to live busy lives without stopping or having time for stopping to think of emotions or analyse situations/experiences and how they drive our choices and lives(psychology) as a result their behaviour, thinking and state of reasoning changes. Often we allow our emotions to control or drive/control our lives rather than to stop, analyse, or think things through and make decisions based upon this analysis. Emotions may result in devastating decisions while choices based upon a thorough analysis may result in positive emotions and outcome. Our psychologist are here to bring your emotions, mind, thinking and behaviour to their proper perspective. Psychology is the understanding of why humans act the way they do, and why they react to things the way they do. Our Psychologists helps you understand the basics of why you may have behave differently than others, and they helps us understand why we are mentally in comparison to others. Everything we do is very much related to psychology. Psychology, primarily studies who and what we are, why we are like that, why we act and think like that and how we can improve ourselves.
Psychology is important in a lot of different ways, for instance there have been a large number of studies conducted on various illnesses. With the help of psychological insights, our psychologist can help in the diagnosis of different diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and some other neurological diseases. By making use of psychological research, our doctors have now developed medicines and even able to alleviate the inpact of different illnesses. Our psychologists are able to better understand and determine how the mind and body of an individual works. With that said, they can help us make better decisions. They can help us avoid things that cause stress; They can help us manage our time to a greater degree and help us set goals, be more effective in our studies or chosen career and last but not least it can help us tackle mental illnesses.
